The Japanese city of Toyama gets so
much winter snowfall that the highways
become snow tunnels when a path is
finally cleared in March. The snow tunnels,
which have walls as high as 66 feet, were
originally created as a route to get
supplies to a hotel atop Mt. Tateyama,
but they’re so unique that they eventually
became a tourist attraction known as
the ‘snow valley walk.’ SourceSource 2Source 3
A stray dog in Bolivia joined a monastery and became a monk. The resident monks of St. Francis Monastery, named for the patron saint of animals, decided to adopt a dog they call ‘Friar Bigotón’ from the Cold Nose Project, which hopes the dog’s story will now inspire more monasteries to take in homeless pets. When it gets cold enough for ice
crystals to form in the air, light pillars
can appear before your very eyes.
Natural and artificial light reflects off
the crystals as they suspend in midair,
creating pillars of vibrant color that
shoot into the sky and give the illusion
that you’re about to be beamed up on
an episode of Star Trek. SourceSource 2
