After being so frustrated with some of my students, failure
rates, and calling home, I decided to make a positive phone call home today.
One of my students, “R”, learned to speak English LAST YEAR and
she is flourishing. She has such a wonderful mind for literature, analysis and
writing, but I can tell she is a little self-conscious and lacking some
confidence in her English language skills. She reads like crazy in Spanish, and
I try to suggest books in English and Spanish to help her develop literacy in
both. I honestly think as her English skills increase, she will belong in
advanced lit classes.
I called home today about her, saying how proud I was of her
and how wonderful she is in class. She works so hard, she is so sweet and diligent.
And as I was speaking with her father, I could hear the happiness and joy in
his voice, and the pride as he said he would share that with his wife and their
student.
Here’s to the quiet ones; the ones that try, the ones that persist, the ones that might not be noticed unless we take the time to talk to and know them. I really hope they celebrate her tonight, because she
deserves it. To “R”’s everywhere.

the fact that the words “Slutshaming” and “Alexander Hamilton” have been used in the same sentence
