Blood is thicker than water The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.

Meaning that relationships formed by choice are stronger than those formed by birth.

Let’s not forget that “Jack of all trades, master of none” ends with “But better than a master of one.”

It means that being equally good/average at everything is much better than being perfect at one thing and sucking at everything else. So don’t worry if you’re not perfect at something you do! Being okay is better!

These made me feel better

Also, “great minds think alike” ends with “but fools rarely differ”

It goes to show that conformity isn’t always a good thing. And that just because more than one person has the same idea, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good idea.

what the fuck why haven’t i heard the full version to any of these

“Birds of a feather flock together” ends with “until the cat comes.”

It’s actually a warning about fair-weather friends, not an assessment of how complementary people are.

I’ve always felt like these were cut down on purpose.

I really like these phrases and plan on spreading this knowledge.

The early bird catches the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

I want to make designs out of these.

Funny how all the half-finished ones encourage uniformity and upholding the status-quo, while the complete proverbs encourage like…living exciting, eclectic lives driven by choice and personal passion.

NICE

So my pain continues. What was supposed to be two months maximum off work with my knee operation has grown more desperate. Despite being able to return to work, work has no hours for me until March. On top of that, the company I do freelance writing through is having issues with my account not logging me in for three weeks with no word of when it will be fixed. I’ve also reached the end of my savings and drained pretty much every account and my credit card.

Upside… I have plenty of time to write?

As always, signal boosts are loved and appreciated.

(If you’re NZ based, special rates bc I don’t have to deal with PayPal and exchange rates and fees and stuff cause I can just do direct bank transfer.)

Off the scale – new species of gecko with tear-away skin

A new species of gecko which evades predators by shedding its massive scales has been discovered by scientists working in Madagascar.

The species, named Geckolepis megalepis by the team of American German and Colombian researchers, is a type of fish gecko.

It has the largest scales of any gecko and skin specially adapted for tearing away at the slightest touch. The scales can grow back without scarring in a few weeks.

In fact, they are so adept at shedding scientists have had to use bundles of cotton wool to catch them in the past so they wouldn’t shed all their scales.

And the ease with which their scales come away makes describing and identifying the species a ‘nightmare’ according to the researchers because the scale pattern is one of the main ways to tell species apart.

In the end they decided to resort to using micro-CT scans to get a 3D picture of their skeletons, and were able to identify some skull features that establish these geckos as a new species.

Oh my fucking god there are two men and two kids at a table on the other side of this beer garden, and one guy is telling the little girl shit like, “Your brain is probably wired linguistically, whereas mine is wired mathematically,” and the girl is saying in a quiet little voice that she got the highest maths score in her grade, and his response is to talk about how men have bigger brains than women and jesus fucking christ someone please tell me why I shouldn’t go over there and pour my beer all over this asshole’s head

I can’t figure out how to reply to replies on mobile but to summarise: I finished my pint and walked over and said to the girl, “Did I hear you say you wanted to be a scientist?” And told her that I’m a scientist, and maths was always my favourite subject when I was a kid, and wished her good luck, and told her the most important thing about science is to question everything. And she turned to the guy (her uncle?) and was like “Yeah, like I was questioning what you were saying before!”

I reckon she’ll be okay.

Awesome ladies, science ladies, real life awesome, adorable children,
